This stag beetle has big sparkly eyes and a wide open smile, and he's standing on a mossy log. His two large curved jaws have wavy, scalloped edges, and segmented antennae curl out on both sides. He has a rounded body, a big smooth oval shell and spiky-legged feet gripping the bumpy moss. Around the log you'll spot a cross-section of tree rings at the left end, large veined leaves, a loose leaf near the bottom and a small cluster of spotted mushrooms on the right. Medium-sized shapes and clear outlines work well for kids who want some detail without feeling overwhelmed. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Color the beetle's wing covers and body in warm brown, leaving the lighter stripe on the wing covers for later.
- 2Fill the head, chest and legs with warm brown and rust brown, using dark brown for the leg joints and shadows.
- 3Color the big horns in dark maroon and the mouth in salmon pink, leaving the eye whites and teeth white.
- 4Fill the fallen log with warm brown and sand tan for the log end rings, then color the moss in fresh green and light lime green.
- 5Color the leaves in forest green and fresh green, then add the mushrooms in bright red with cream stems and white spots.
- 6Optional: Add darker shading under the beetle and along the log edges with a deeper brown for a bit more depth.
