Grinning Worm Poking Out of an Apple

Coloring guide
Here's a happy little worm sticking its head out of a round hole in the side of a big apple. It has wide eyes and an open, smiling mouth. Stripes divide its body, so kids can tell where each segment starts and stops. On top of the apple sits a thick stem, with a leaf on each side showing simple vein lines. Outlines are bold and the shapes big and open, which suits preschoolers and early elementary kids who are still building marker and crayon control. There's no clutter behind the apple, so you've got lots of room to color. A bright red or green apple looks great with a lime green worm striped in yellow, and the hole can stay a darker brown. A gentle color plan to get started — mix in your own anytime.
- bright red
- leaf green
- pale pink
- rose pink
- chestnut brown
- dark red
- hot pink
A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Color the whole apple with bright red, using short back-and-forth strokes and leaving the small white highlight near the top right alone.
- 2Fill both leaves with leaf green and the stem and its top with chestnut brown.
- 3Color the worm's head and the lighter rings of its body with pale pink, then alternate with rose pink on the other rings.
- 4Fill the shadowy part of the worm where it sinks into the apple with dark red.
- 5Color the open smile hot pink, and keep the eye whites and the shine spots white so the face pops.
- 6Optional: add a few darker red strokes along the edge of the apple to give it a little depth.
