Trio of Pumpkins by a Wooden Fence for Fall

Three ribbed pumpkins line up in front of a wooden picket fence: a large one in the middle, a medium one on the left and a small one on the right. Each has a curved stem and curly vines that spiral out into the scene. Big lobed leaves peek out near the top of the fence and in the bottom corners, and little tufts of grass cover the ground. The fence has three pointed pickets, each with a small round nail hole, and a horizontal rail runs across the back. Younger kids with chunky crayons will do well on the wide pumpkin sections, and older kids can work on the leaves, vines and fence boards. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start by coloring the three pumpkins in pumpkin orange, leaving the thin highlight lines and the background white.
- 2Color the fence posts and crossbars in wood tan, keeping the background behind them white.
- 3Fill the large leaves at the top and bottom corners with leaf green, and the two lower leaves with bright lime green.
- 4Color the pumpkin stems and small leaf stems in leaf green, and add khaki olive to the little tendril under the top leaf.
- 5Leave the curly tendrils at the top and right white, as in the example, so they stand out against the orange.
- 6Optional: Add a few light strokes of darker orange along the edges of the pumpkins for a bit of shading and depth.
