This garden scene shows two smiling gnomes in tall pointed hats busy with a young sapling. The one on the left holds the small leafy plant with its root ball showing, and the one on the right leans on a long shovel next to a fresh mound of dug soil. Each has big round eyes, a rosy nose, a curly beard, pointed ears, sturdy boots and a belted tunic. You'll also spot an open sack of soil, a watering can waiting at the bottom right, little grass tufts and bushy shrubs in the back. It suits spring, Earth Day or a lesson on gardening. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big sack in burlap tan, then fill its top with dark brown soil and the gnomes' hats in red, leaving the right gnome's hat white.
- 2Color both gnomes' faces and ears in peach skin, and keep their beards white so they stand out.
- 3Use sky blue for the left gnome's shirt and the watering can, and grass green for the pants and bushes.
- 4Color the boots in brown, the shovel blade in light gray, the shovel handle in light brown, and the belts and plant roots in dark brown.
- 5Finish the sapling leaves and little grass tufts in lime green. Optional: add a slightly darker shade of each color on one side of shapes for depth.
