Two cartoon monkeys dash through a grassy jungle clearing in this lively scene. The one on the left runs with a big open-mouthed smile and its tail curled behind. The larger monkey on the right springs over a fallen log, arms stretched forward and its long tail arcing high over its head. You'll spot tufts of grass, big feathery ferns, large tropical leaves in the top corner, a tree trunk with leaves at upper right, and several five-petal flowers in the bottom corners. Clean lines and open shapes work well for preschoolers and early elementary kids with crayons or markers. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the grass and ground in lime green, filling the open grass patches around the monkeys and along the bottom of the page.
- 2Color the big leaves and ferns in leaf green, and add bright green to the lower grass tufts and the small leaves at the top right.
- 3Fill both monkeys' fur, their tails, and the fallen log in warm brown, leaving the tree trunk at the top right white.
- 4Use soft peach for the monkeys' faces, muzzles, ears, hands, and feet, keeping the eye whites and the background white.
- 5Color the flower petals in coral pink, including the big monkey's tongue, and leave the flower centers white.
- 6Optional: add a slightly darker brown on the shaded sides of the monkeys and the log for a bit of depth.
