Inside a Volcano: Cross-Section with Magma Chamber
Coloring guide
This cutaway shows what goes on inside an erupting volcano, so it's a good match for a science lesson or a curious kid. A big bubbly magma chamber sits at the bottom, and a wide channel climbs from it through the middle of the mountain. Up top, lava splashes out of the crater and drips over the rim. The ground around the tunnel is drawn as wavy layers dotted with oval rocks and pebbles. Rolling hills, three puffy clouds, a small bush and a few grass tufts on each side fill the background. Large shapes and bold lines help kids who are still building crayon control. Fill the magma chamber and the channel with orange and red, then give each rock layer its own earthy brown, tan or gray. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Color the magma chamber at the bottom and the central lava column with fiery red, and fill the crater rim and the top left splash with the same red.
- 2Fill the lava outlines, the eruption splashes at the top, and the edges of the chamber with warm orange, then use bright orange for the small right splash.
- 3Color the rock layers in light gray and sandy tan, alternating stripes from top to bottom, and leave the rock pebbles white for now.
- 4Color the two mountain slopes in chocolate brown, the inner vent sides in dark olive, and the band of rock between them in pale green. Leave the snowy sides of the mountain white.
- 5Fill the clouds with sky blue, the hills and bushes with forest green, and the grass tufts with lime green.
- 6Color the rock blobs in slate gray and the bubbles inside the magma with golden yellow. Optional: add a little darker shading along the edges of the mountain for depth.
