Clinging sideways to a bark-lined trunk, a little woodpecker presses its beak against a jagged hole while tiny wood chips fly out. It has a spiky head crest, a big round eye, a smiling beak, scalloped wing feathers, a long tail and sharp claws gripping the bark. Below, a smiling caterpillar with two antennae inches along the trunk. Leafy branches in the corners add a few big leaf shapes to color. Wide bark lines and large open spaces suit preschoolers and early elementary kids using crayons or markers. A red patch on the crest, soft brown and tan wings, and a bright green caterpillar will stand out against the bark. This free printable is good for kids and coloring fans of all ages. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Color the leaves and the caterpillar body with leaf green, and the caterpillar head with light lime green.
- 2Fill the wings and the tail feathers with charcoal gray, keeping the feather edges clearly visible.
- 3Paint the head crest and the long right tail feather with bright red.
- 4Color the wood chip patch on the trunk with light tan, and the branch and the strip at the top of the trunk with bark brown.
- 5Fill the beak, the feet and the claws with slate blue gray, and leave the head, chest, neck, belly and eye white. Optional: add a little darker gray along the wing edges for depth.
