Here's a smiling baby chameleon with big round eyes, sitting on a large leaf and looking down at a tiny ladybug crawling close by. Its curly spiral tail, the bumpy crest on its back and its little toed feet all have clean, bold outlines. A second pointed leaf with simple veins sits behind its head. The ladybug has two antennae and a spotted shell, a nice small detail for little hands to fill in. Thick lines and roomy shapes suit preschoolers and early elementary kids, and the calm scene makes a good quiet afternoon activity. Bright lime green with a yellow belly would look great on the chameleon, and a red ladybug with black spots will stand out against the leaves. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Fill the big leaf under the chameleon, including the lower left and bottom right parts, with leaf green, and leave the tall back leaf white.
- 2Color the chameleon's head, body, tail, legs and feet with lime green, leaving the eye whites white.
- 3Paint the chameleon's belly and the small patch near its tail with pale yellow and leaf green so the light areas stand out.
- 4Color the spikes along the chameleon's back teal, and fill the ladybug's head with charcoal gray.
- 5Fill the ladybug's shell with red, then add black spots, antennae and legs, keeping the small shine on the ladybug's eye white.
- 6Finish by filling the pupils of the chameleon's eyes with black, keeping the small white shine dots inside them. Optional: add a slightly darker stroke of leaf green along the edges of the leaf for depth.
