Popping out of a cracked eggshell, a fluffy baby chick raises both little wings, with wide round eyes and a small open beak that looks like a happy chirp. The shell has zigzag edges, and a broken piece of the top still sits on the chick's head like a hat. Underneath, the egg rests in a nest of loose straw with a few grass tufts on either side. A wooden fence stands behind with three tall pointed boards and wood grain marks, and a small wall calendar with empty squares hangs from the right-hand board on two hooks. Spring and Easter activities suit this free printable, as does a lesson on counting days until something special. Soft yellow for the chick, warm tan for the straw and pale blue or pink for the shell look good. The big open spaces are friendly to little hands. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Color the chick's body, head, both wings and the little tuft on top with lemon yellow, leaving the two eye whites empty.
- 2Fill the beak with bright orange and the open mouth with coral pink.
- 3Color the two eggshell pieces, the top cracked shell and the bottom egg, with cream white.
- 4Fill the nest with golden yellow, adding burnt orange in the darker strands around the edges.
- 5Color the fence posts and rails with warm brown, and keep the background around them white.
- 6Color the calendar's top band and hanging rings sky blue, the hanger with warm brown, and leave the calendar grid cream white. Optional: add a little darker shading under the chick and inside the nest for depth.
