Hatching Baby Duckling in a Straw Nest
Coloring guide
Peeking out of a cracked eggshell is a fluffy baby duckling with a big open-mouthed smile, round shiny eyes and a small tuft of feathers on its head. One little wing rests on the jagged edge of the shell. The egg sits in a woven straw nest, and a few tufts of grass and a simple five-petal flower on a long stem fill the corners. Bold, clean outlines and large open spaces suit preschoolers and early elementary kids, and the page works well for spring or Easter activities. Soft yellow for the fluffy body, orange for the bill and warm browns and golds for the nest are good picks. Print this free page at home or in the classroom. A gentle color plan to get started — mix in your own anytime.
- bright yellow
- eggshell cream
- wheat tan
- rose pink
- chestnut brown
- tangerine orange
- grass green
A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start by coloring the chick's whole body and head with bright yellow, leaving the eye whites and the small highlight shapes white.
- 2Fill the beak with tangerine orange and the open mouth with rose pink for a cheerful look.
- 3Color the eggshell pieces and the cracked top edge with eggshell cream, so the shell stands out against the nest.
- 4Use wheat tan for the lighter straw in the nest and chestnut brown for the darker strands, alternating them for a woven look.
- 5Add grass green to the grass tufts on both sides and to the leaves at the bottom right, then color the flower petals rose pink and its center bright yellow.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker shading under the chick and inside the nest to make the straw and the egg look more three-dimensional.
