Birthday Cake With Candles for Presidents' Day
Coloring guide
On top of a round two-layer cake sit five tall striped candles with little flames. Wavy frosting covers the top, with dots along the edge and swirly dollops of cream between the candles. Each layer has a row of triangle pennant flags and small stars, and the whole cake rests on a big round cake stand. A plate sits in the lower right corner, and a polka-dot napkin peeks in at the bottom left. Bunting hangs in the top corners and stars float around the cake. The large shapes are easy for small hands, so it works for a party table or a quiet afternoon. Red and white stripes on the candles and blue stars on the cake give it a patriotic look. - 1Start with the large cake tiers and the cake stand: fill the tiers with chocolate brown and the stand and table top with bright blue.
- 2Color the thick frosting on top of the cake in bubblegum pink, and the two wide bands around the cake in golden yellow.
- 3Add the bunting flags across each tier, alternating bright red, leaf green, golden yellow and sky blue for a festive pattern.
- 4Fill the frosting swirls with cream white, then color the candles with sky blue, bright red, royal purple, leaf green and lemon yellow, leaving the thin white stripes untouched.
- 5Color the candle flames golden yellow and the small stars lemon yellow, then add the table edge in aqua blue and the plates in golden yellow.
- 6Optional: add a slightly darker brown along the lower edges of the cake to make it look a little more three-dimensional.
