Guardian Lions at the Gate, Chinese New Year Scene

Two smiling guardian lion statues sit on decorative pedestals on either side of a traditional Chinese gateway. Each lion has a curly mane, a bell on its collar and a patterned ball under one paw. The pedestals have a key-pattern border, a fun repeating design for little hands. Over the pillars, a curved tiled roof with upturned ends covers five hanging lanterns, each with a tassel. On both sides behind the gate, a few puffy clouds or treetops peek out, and a short set of steps leads up to the open doorway. Paper tiles run across the foreground. Red and gold suit the lanterns and roof beams, and warm orange manes will stand out against gray stone steps. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big roof and tiles: color the curved roof tiles golden yellow and the roof curls and edges bright yellow, leaving the small round bells white.
- 2Fill the two tall pillars and the beams with brick red, and color the round lanterns and the roof ridge top bright red, leaving the thin white highlights on the lanterns white.
- 3Color the trees and bushes on both sides with leaf green and forest green, and the garden walls and wall tops with medium gray.
- 4Paint both lion statues cream beige, then add the coral red collars on the lions and the bright red ribbons on the lantern tassels, keeping the eyes and teeth white.
- 5Finish the stone steps, pavement and pedestals with light gray and the pedestal bands with coral red and golden yellow. Optional: add a little darker shading under the roof and along the lion bodies for depth.
