Lion Dance Costume in a Courtyard, Chinese New Year Fun

A shaggy lion dance costume stands in the middle of a tiled courtyard. It has big round eyes, a fluffy mane, a curly beard and a wide smiling mouth, and a small striped horn on its head. Two performer legs in fuzzy trim and sneakers are set in a dancing stance, and patterned scales cover the body. All around you'll spot two round drums with flower designs and drumsticks, hanging round lanterns, a blossoming branch in the corner, pagoda-style rooftops, a decorative fence and a gate. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big red areas: color the lion's legs, pants and the two drums with cherry red, leaving the drum heads and cuffs for later.
- 2Fill the floor tiles, confetti and fence with light gray, and the bushes on both sides with leaf green.
- 3Color the lion's yellow trim: the mouth outline, the nose pieces, the eye rims, the top of the hat band and the mane stripes with golden yellow.
- 4Paint the drum heads and the pillar base with sand tan, and the top hat cone with orange, then add the forehead medallion in sky blue.
- 5Leave the lion's fur, eye whites, teeth and the background sky and roofs white, and fill the beard with pale cream for a soft glow.
- 6Optional: Add a little shading with a slightly darker shade of each color along the edges to make the costume look puffy.
