A smiling sea lion pup sits upright in shallow water inside a rocky sea cave, tilting its head and looking up with big round eyes and long whiskers. Its front flippers rest on the rippling surface. Pointed stalactites hang from the ceiling, and sunlight streams through the arched opening behind it. Look around the edges for a starfish on the rocks, clusters of barnacles, a scallop shell in the bottom corner, sea anemones or flowers on the right, and a little seaweed. The big smooth body is easy for small hands, while the rocks and ripples give older kids more to do. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Fill the seal's body, head and flippers with medium gray, then leave the cream muzzle area for a soft finishing touch.
- 2Color the sea and water with bright blue, and use pale blue for the distant water and the bright light rays near the cave opening.
- 3Color the cave walls, ceiling and stalactites with tan brown, and the rocks around the water with sandy tan, keeping the cave's white foam spots bare.
- 4Add dusty rose to the seaweed on the right, warm beige to the distant rocks, and dark brown to the upper left rock. Fill the cream muzzle last.
- 5Finish the little details like the barnacles, shells and starfish with sandy tan and tan brown, and leave tiny highlights white.
- 6Optional: add light strokes of a darker shade along the seal's body and the edges of the rocks to make them look rounder.
