Church Bell Tower and a Swooping Bat at Night

Past an old stone bell tower swoops a smiling bat with big pointed ears and outstretched wings, in a night scene. Through the tower's arched opening you can see a large bell hanging from a wooden beam, and a small cross sits atop the tiled pyramid roof. Little stars, drifting clouds and a big crescent moon fill the sky. Below, a village of tile-roofed houses with a small steeple stretches toward a distant lake and rolling hills, and leafy branches frame the left edge. Older kids can work on the stones, roof tiles and rooftops, while the bat's fluffy chest and large wings suit younger ones. Deep blues and purples fit the sky, warm yellow the moon and stars, and soft gray-brown the bat. Print it free for Halloween week or a quiet evening. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the night sky and clouds: color the pale blue clouds, then the distant hills and sea in sky blue and teal, leaving the stars and moon white.
- 2Fill the big bat wings and body in dusty brown, and the bell in sage green, keeping the bat's eyes and teeth white.
- 3Color the bell tower stones in cream and light sand, alternating them so the wall looks like old stone, and paint the sand beige roof edges and tan bat ears and arms.
- 4Add the terracotta roof tiles on the tower and the rooftops of the village, then use forest green and leaf green for the bushes, trees and leaves.
- 5Optional: Add a little soft pink inside the bat ears and navy blue or royal blue for the shadowed window and bell tower openings to finish the scene.
