A sleepy little bat hangs upside down from a leafy tree branch with its wings folded around its body like a cozy blanket. Right beside it, a wide-eyed owl perches on the same branch. A big round moon with crater circles glows behind them in a sky dotted with small outline stars, and a few leaves sprout along the branch. Both animals have large, shiny eyes and sweet little faces, so it's a friendly pick for preschoolers and early elementary kids. The owl's scalloped chest feathers and the bat's folded wings leave lots of space for careful crayon work. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big moon and stars: fill the moon with soft yellow and the stars with the same soft yellow, leaving the background white.
- 2Color the owl's face, belly and head feathers, using pale tan for the face and belly and chestnut brown for the top feathers, keeping the eye whites white.
- 3Fill the owl's wings and tail with warm light brown and chestnut brown, then add the golden yellow beak and claws.
- 4Color the bat's wings in violet purple and its face and head in lavender gray, with coral pink inside the ears.
- 5Add the tree branches in chestnut brown and the leaves in leaf green, leaving the little leaf highlights white.
- 6Optional: Add golden yellow to a few moon craters and use a slightly darker shade in the corners of the wings for extra depth.
