Across the middle of this detailed underwater scene swims a friendly sea turtle with big round eyes and a gentle smile. Its shell is split into neat patterned sections, and its flippers are covered in spotted, scaly designs. A school of small fish swims in a loose group above it, beneath rays of light and floating bubbles. On the right, a little seahorse clings to tall wavy seaweed, and a smiling crab waits in the lower left corner. Near the bottom, a tipped-over clay pot with a zigzag band sits among tube sponges, branching coral and a starfish on the sandy floor. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the water in sky blue around the top and sides of the scene, and use light blue for the distant seabed; leave the small bubbles and fish white.
- 2Fill the turtle shell with caramel brown and chocolate brown, using amber orange on the edge plates, and keep the plates near the middle a bit lighter.
- 3Color the turtle head and flippers in pale yellow and butter yellow, then add light olive and grass green patches on the flippers.
- 4Paint the jar in terracotta and tangerine, the seahorse in sea green, and the seaweed in forest green and grass green.
- 5Color the crab in coral red, leave its eyes white, and fill the sand with golden yellow and pale yellow; use lavender gray for the corals.
- 6Optional: add a slightly darker brown along the edges of the shell plates for depth.
