Stone Bridge Sunrise Walk for Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Coloring guide
Five people cross an arched stone bridge in single file, with the smallest child at the front and a taller adult bringing up the back. The line runs from a little boy to a girl with a ponytail, then an older child, a woman with long hair, and finally a man, all looking ahead as they step forward. The bridge is made of rows of big stones that are easy to color, and calm ripples move across the river below. Rounded bushes, grassy tufts and smooth rocks line the banks, with rolling hills behind. A large sun with long rays peeks over the horizon, and three puffy clouds drift above. It suits lessons about walking together on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Warm oranges and yellows work for the sun, soft blues for the water, and any mix of skin tones and clothing colors for the walkers. Print it free for a classroom project or a weekend craft. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big background areas: color the hills and riverbanks in grass green, and the bushes on both sides in forest green.
- 2Color the sky clouds in pale blue and the sun in golden yellow, leaving the sky and the small highlights in the sun's rays white.
- 3Fill the bridge stones in tan, light beige and sand beige, alternating shades so the arch looks like real stone, and color the river under the arch in light blue.
- 4Color the walkers next: the boy in the blue shirt, the woman in the purple top, the girl in the coral pink dress and the red shirt on the boy in the middle. Use caramel brown for the boy's pants and deep blue or sky blue for the jeans.
- 5Add the hair in medium brown, dark brown and orange, then the faces in peach skin, leaving the eye whites and face highlights white.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker shading on the bridge stones and riverbanks to make the scene feel more solid.
