Flag With Diagonal Cross, Crest and Cotton Boll

A rectangular flag outline is divided by a wide diagonal cross that runs corner to corner. In the top triangle sits a detailed coat of arms. Two tall birds with spread feathers stand on either side of a shield, and a small sailing ship rises above it. The shield is split into sections that hold fleur-de-lis shapes, a striped diagonal pattern and a few small symbols. A curled ribbon underneath carries the words Audemus Jura Nostra Defendere. In the bottom triangle there is a single cotton plant with an open boll, pointed leaves and a twisted rope base. Try coloring the two large side triangles in one bold color and leaving the cross a contrasting shade. Then use small details like the ship, the birds and the cotton boll to talk about what symbols on a flag can mean. This free printable suits older kids who like fine detail work.
