Gone Fishing: Troll on a Log Beside a Frog

A shaggy, smiling troll sits on a fallen log at the edge of a pond, gripping a long, bendy fishing pole in both hands. He has pointed ears, a big round nose, two little tusks and tufty hair, and he's dressed in a furry vest and shorts. His bare feet rest close to the water. The line drops to a round bobber floating in rippling water on the right. Over in the bottom left, a small spotted frog sits on a lily pad, looking up at him. Tall cattails and grass grow on both sides, and a leafy bush peeks out behind the log. Clear outlines and big shapes work for young children, and the fur and reeds keep older kids busy. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the troll's face, arms, hands, legs and feet: fill them with light green, and leave the eye whites white.
- 2Color the troll's hair, fur vest and the big log in warm brown, adding the dark brown touches on the inner ear area.
- 3Fill the cattails with rust brown and the reeds and grass with bright green and forest green, leaving the pale highlights on the grass near the log.
- 4Color the frog in bright green and the lily pads in forest green, then add the bush behind the troll in the same forest green.
- 5Color the fishing bobber bright red, keeping its bottom part white.
- 6Optional: Add a little apricot orange to the log end rings and a few darker strokes of warm brown on the water for depth.
