Thirsty Giraffe Leaning Down to the Pond

A young giraffe plants its long front legs wide and lowers its head until its nose touches the water of a small pond, making gentle ripples. We see it from the front, with big round eyes, small ossicones, and a tufted tail swishing off to one side. Lily pads, smooth rocks, grass tufts, and rounded bushes in the background surround the pond. The large patchwork spots on the neck and legs are great for practicing careful coloring inside the lines. Golden yellow and orange-brown suit the patches, and soft blues and greens work well for the water and lily pads. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the giraffe's body, neck and legs in golden yellow, leaving the white eye shines and the open space between the legs white.
- 2Color the spots on the body, neck and legs in caramel brown, and the forelock tuft and tail tip in dark brown.
- 3Fill the ears with peach pink and the chin with pale yellow, then color the hooves dark brown.
- 4Paint the grass and bushes in bush green and light green, and the pond water and ripples in sky blue.
- 5Color the rocks in warm gray, then add the chestnut brown ossicones and finish with the white eye shines.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker shading on the rocks and along the legs for depth.
