On the petal edge of a big open poppy sits a cheerful ladybug with big round eyes, a wide smile and two curly antennae. Large circle spots cover its rounded shell, and its little legs hold onto the ruffled petal. At the center of the flower you can see a ribbed seed pod ringed by small stamens with dotted tips. A closed bud droops on a bristly curved stem behind the bloom, tall blades of grass fill the background, and a lobed leaf sits at the bottom left. Open petals are easy for small hands, while the stamens and spots keep older kids busy. Bright red petals, an orange or yellow shell for contrast, and green grass and leaf would all work. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Color the big poppy petals and the ladybug's shell with poppy red, leaving small gaps so the black lines still show through.
- 2Fill the ladybug's head with soft peach, and keep the two eye whites and the small shine dots white.
- 3Color the grass blades, the poppy bud and the leaves with grass green, working from the largest areas to the smallest.
- 4Shade the middle seed pod with lime green, then add a little dark brown under the ladybug for a soft shadow.
- 5Fill the ladybug's spots with black and leave the legs and antennae white.
- 6Optional: Add a second layer of poppy red on the petals' edges for a richer, more textured look.
