Grinning Octopus Beneath a Pirate Ship at Sea

A big, grinning octopus takes over this page, its eight curly tentacles spread wide with rows of little suckers to color. Above the wavy waterline floats a small ship with a skull and crossbones on its sail, a flag on top and a round porthole on the hull. Three striped fish swim around the octopus, and bubbles drift up toward a puffy cloud in the corner. Down at the bottom, tall wavy seaweed and a few rocks sit on the seabed. Large shapes and bold outlines suit preschoolers and early elementary kids, and the spots on the octopus's head and the fish stripes give older children more to work on. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Color the big octopus head and all eight tentacles with violet purple, leaving the two large eye whites and the small shine dots white.
- 2Fill the seaweed on both sides and along the bottom with leaf green, and color the two seabed rocks light gray.
- 3Paint the pirate sail charcoal black, keep the skull and crossbones white, and fill the ship hull with chocolate brown.
- 4Color the three fish with golden yellow bodies and tangerine orange stripes, then fill the cloud and the bubbles with pale sky blue and sky blue.
- 5Add soft lilac spots on the octopus head, a coral pink smile, and a bright blue porthole; keep the ship deck and railings white.
- 6Optional: Add a slightly darker shade of violet purple along the lower edges of the tentacles to make them look rounder.
