This cartoon apple has big round eyes, rosy cheeks and an open smile, and it's perched on two stacked books with a leafy stem curling from its head. A shiny highlight is drawn on the upper left, which is a good place to leave white or add a light touch. The top book is a thick hardcover with a spine band, and below it is a spiral notebook with big metal rings down the left edge. All of it rests on a small hexagonal table with chunky legs. Bold, clean outlines and large open shapes make it easy for little hands, and it suits a classroom activity or a printable for the start of the year. Bright red for the apple and green for the leaf work well, and a different cover color on each book helps the stack stand out. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Fill the whole apple with bright red, leaving the two small shine spots on its side white.
- 2Color the apple stem dark brown and the table top and both table legs light brown.
- 3Color the top book's cover and bottom edge medium blue, its top surface bright blue, and the two spine bands golden yellow; leave the page edge cream.
- 4Color the notebook purple, with its left end lavender and its metal end light gray; leave the spiral coils and bottom pages cream.
- 5Fill the mouth with deep rose and the tongue with light pink, keeping the eye whites white. Leave the background and the space under the table white.
- 6Optional: Add light, diagonal back-and-forth strokes in a slightly darker shade of each color to give the apple and books some texture.
