A smiling baby bat with big pointed ears, fluffy fur and one tiny fang glides across the sky, wings spread wide, with three patterned butterflies fluttering around it. Down below is a meadow of daisy-like coneflowers, small five-petal blossoms, tall grass and slender lavender stalks. A sun sets behind rolling hills, and a few puffy clouds drift overhead. The large wing panels and butterfly wings leave lots of space for bold color, and the flowers and grass are better for finer pencil work. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the bat's body: fill it with light tan, leaving the big eyes and the little teeth white.
- 2Color the bat's arms, feet and the wing membranes with chocolate brown and warm gray, as shown in the example.
- 3Fill the inner ears with light pink, then color the top butterfly and the bat's wing tips with golden yellow.
- 4Paint the left butterfly and the daisy flowers with rose pink, and the lower right butterfly with sky blue, leaving its little spots white.
- 5Color the hills and grass with lime green, grass green for the stems and forest green for the darkest grass at the bottom; keep the flower centers white.
- 6Optional: add a little darker warm gray shading on the wings and the clouds in pale blue to finish the sky.
