Frog Gazing Up at a Fluttering Butterfly

A smiling frog sits upright on a big lily pad and looks up with round eyes at a friendly butterfly overhead. The butterfly has a cheerful face, curled antennae, and large wings filled with spots, scalloped edges, and swirly patterns, plus little motion lines to show it's flying. The frog has spotted sides, webbed toes spread across the pad, and a wide open smile. Tall cattails and long grass blades frame both sides of the pond, and a few more lily pads float close by. Big shapes and clear outlines are easy for small hands, and older kids will enjoy the butterfly wings and frog spots. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the frog's body and legs in leaf green, leaving the big light belly area in pale lime.
- 2Color the lily pad and the grass blades in grass green and forest green, adding a few darker strokes for depth.
- 3Fill the cattails with cocoa brown and the pond water with sky blue, keeping the frog's big eye whites and the background white.
- 4Paint the butterfly wings with lavender purple, light pink, rose pink and salmon pink, then add tangerine and pumpkin orange to the lower wings.
- 5Color the butterfly body in golden yellow and amber yellow, and add the frog's mouth in salmon pink.
- 6Optional: Add small leaf green or forest green shadows under the frog and along the grass to make the scene feel more lively.
