Standing on a big lily pad with its head tipped up, this baby turtle looks happy and curious. Its honeycomb shell pattern is simple enough for small hands. To the right, a friendly frog grins from the water, and a little dragonfly with a cheerful face hovers overhead. Tall cattails and grassy reeds frame both sides of the pond. A small water lily blooms in the bottom corner, and gentle ripples circle the lily pads. Because the lines are bold and the spaces generous, preschoolers and early elementary kids should get on well with this free printable. Soft greens suit the turtle's shell and the frog, and a bright pink or yellow on the water lily will stand out against the pond. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Fill the large lily pad, the small lily pads at the bottom and the frog's lily pad with lime green, leaving the pond lines white.
- 2Color the turtle's head, legs and feet, the frog's body and arms with light green, and the bush and reed leaves with leaf green.
- 3Color the shell plates with medium brown, the shell edges with amber, and the shell ridge with dark brown, then fill the belly and neck area with pale yellow.
- 4Color the cattail heads with medium brown, the dragonfly's wings with pale blue, its body with sky blue, and its head with light blue.
- 5Add the lotus flower in hot pink and light pink, and color the turtle's tongue with rose pink. Keep the turtle's eye whites white.
- 6Optional: add a few darker strokes on the shell and lily pad edges to add depth.
