Garden Chicken Family with a Scarecrow and Carrots

A big fluffy hen walks through a garden bed with two round little chicks beside her, one on each side, all glancing around as they stroll. A wooden picket fence crosses the page behind them, and a smiling scarecrow in a straw hat and overalls stands with his arms stretched wide. Carrots poke out of the soil along the bottom, and big leafy cabbages fill the right corners. Look closely and you'll also find a basket piled with carrots, a watering can, daisy-like flowers, a leafy tree and puffy clouds. The hen's layered feathers and wing leave lots of room for detail, while the chicks are good for bigger crayons. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the sky corners and the small clouds in light sky blue, leaving the big cloud white.
- 2Color the hen's body and chest in caramel, then fill the wing and tail feathers with chestnut brown.
- 3Paint the scarecrow's overalls denim blue and the hat and straw in wheat tan, leaving the face white.
- 4Fill both chicks with golden yellow, keeping the beaks and eyes white for a bright look.
- 5Color the carrots carrot orange and the cabbages and leaves in lime green and pale lime, then add the soil in soil brown and the fence in wheat tan.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker shading in the hen's wing feathers and the soil edges to give the picture more depth.
