Nesting Chicken on a Straw Bed with Eggs

Inside a wooden crate, a smiling, plump hen sits on a nest of straw while two round eggs peek out beside her. Long lashes on her big eyes, plus a small beak, wattle and scalloped comb, give her a friendly face. Scalloped feathers cover her wing and body, and her tail feathers fan out behind. The barn wall behind the crate is made of upright planks with knotholes, and the crate front has plank lines and a few round nail dots. Large shapes and clear outlines work for preschoolers and early elementary kids, and older children can add detail in the straw. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the chicken body, wing, and tail feathers in burnt orange, using smooth strokes that follow the feather shapes.
- 2Fill the head and neck with cream, then color the comb and wattle bright red.
- 3Color the straw bed and both eggs golden yellow, and add the beak in the same golden yellow.
- 4Fill the wooden nest box and crate planks with light brown, add wood brown to the nest sides and corners, and use caramel for the nest rim.
- 5Color the wall planks light brown, leaving the eye whites and background white. Optional: add a little darker burnt orange along the wing edges for depth.
