Coloring guide

A bald eagle with spread wings sits on a rock in the center of this Illinois flag, gripping a striped shield dotted with stars. The rock is marked with the years 1818 and 1868. In its beak the eagle holds a ribbon that reads National Union, and a second banner curls below it with the words State Sovereignty. Behind the eagle, a sun with long rays rises over a line of water, and tufts of grass and a few leaves fill the ground. The word ILLINOIS is written in outlined block letters along the bottom. This one is good for a state study unit. Kids can color the shield stripes and stars first, then pick warm yellows and oranges for the sunrise. Older students could look up what the two dates stand for and write a sentence about each.
