Sailing Into Friendship with Two Kids and a Puppy

A gentle color plan to get started — mix in your own anytime.

• bright red
• bright blue
• pale sky blue
• peach tan
• caramel brown
• golden yellow
• light gray
• navy blue
• rosy pink

A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.

1. 1Start with the sea: fill the waves on the left and right with bright blue, leaving the white foam splashes around the boat bow and bottom unpainted.
2. 2Color the sky clouds pale sky blue, and the small island and rocks in peach tan and caramel brown.
3. 3Fill the sail stripes with bright red, leaving the wide white bands between them empty so the sail looks striped, then paint the wooden mast caramel brown.
4. 4Color the two life vests golden yellow, the children's faces, hands and arms peach tan, and the boy's cap navy blue with a bright blue brim.
5. 5Add the red stripes on the boat's edge and the buoy, keeping the boat hull, puppy and lighthouse white.
6. 6Optional: Add a little light gray shading under the boy's shirt and along the dog's ears to give the picture some depth.
