A gentle color plan to get started — mix in your own anytime.

A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.

1. 1Start with the big tree: fill the whole Christmas tree with forest green, and use leaf green for a few lighter branch areas, leaving the small white highlights untouched.
2. 2Color the boy's sweater and the girl's sweater with medium blue and cherry red, and the boy's jeans with medium blue too.
3. 3Fill the faces, hands and legs with peach skin, leaving the eye whites white, then color the boy's and girl's hair with warm brown and bright yellow.
4. 4Add the star in bright yellow, the pot in brick red, the puppy in soft gold, and the sofa in medium blue with its cushion in bright yellow.
5. 5Color the ornaments with cherry red, bright blue and silver gray, and the candy canes and tree trunk details with the matching colors, keeping the small white shine spots.
6. 6Optional: Add a little cool gray shadow under the ornaments and stool for depth, and finish the window and boots with pale sky blue and warm brown.
