Kite-Flying Snowman on a Snowy Hill

Head tipped back, this smiling snowman watches a diamond-shaped kite soar overhead. He wears a pom-pom knit hat and a long fringed scarf, holds the kite string in one mittened hand and keeps the other mitten tucked close to his body. His round belly has two buttons, and his carrot nose points up at the sky. The kite has a crisscross frame that is easy to color and three little bows on its tail. Gentle snowy hills roll across the background with two small evergreens, a few grass tufts poking through the snow and fluffy clouds in the sky. Large shapes and clean lines suit preschoolers and early elementary kids. Bright red and white stripes would look good on the hat and scarf, and a cheerful yellow kite with rainbow bows would round it out. A free printable for a winter afternoon. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the sky: color the clouds and the middle cloud light blue, then fill the snowy hills on both sides with pale blue.
- 2Color the kite's top and right panels bright red and its lower panel golden yellow, then add the kite tail bows and ribbons in red, blue, yellow and rose pink.
- 3Fill the snowman's hat with bright blue, with the lower flap and edge in deep blue, and color the pompom light blue.
- 4Color the scarf, both mittens and the buttons bright red, and make the carrot nose orange with a dark red open smile, leaving the snowman's body white.
- 5Color the two Christmas trees green with their snowy tops and bottom tiers left white, then add the golden yellow and bright blue details to the bows.
- 6Optional: add a little darker blue on the lower edges of the hills and a touch of deep blue on the hat flap for depth.
