On all fours, a cheerful boy crawls through a curved underground tunnel in a round-helmeted suit covered in oval spots. One arm ends in a big armored glove with long curved claws, reaching toward the front of the picture. A smiling mole with whiskers, a small pointed nose and wide digging claws creeps along the dirt floor beside him. Thin tree roots hang from the ceiling and walls of the tunnel, and pebbles and little round bubbles of soil are scattered everywhere. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the dirt: fill the tunnel walls and the mound with chocolate brown and dark brown, and the ground at the bottom with tan brown.
- 2Color the mole's body dark gray, and paint its claws and nose soft peach so they stand out.
- 3Fill the boy's face with skin tone, his hair with rust brown, and his helmet with light sky blue, leaving the eyes and the white helmet dots white.
- 4Paint the big drill arm and the suit with royal blue, bright blue, and steel blue, add bright red bands and spots, and keep the white suit areas white.
- 5Add the small stones with medium gray and the background white; for a finishing touch, use a slightly darker shade along the edges of the tunnel.
- 6Optional: Add soft shading with a darker tone along one side of the mole and the drill arm to make them look rounded.
