Big Cow and Little Calf Standing on a Bed of Hay

A gentle color plan to get started — mix in your own anytime.

• warm cream
• soft pink
• warm brown
• dark gray
• grass green
• pale yellow

A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.

1. 1Start with the patches of grass in grass green, leaving the thin blades of grass that stick out white.
2. 2Color the cow's face, muzzle, and ears, plus the calf's muzzle and ears, in soft pink, keeping the eye whites white.
3. 3Fill the cow's horns in pale yellow, then color the cow's body patches, tail, and the calf's brown spot and tail in warm brown.
4. 4Color the rest of both bodies, the forelocks, and the calf's legs in warm cream, leaving the shiny eye highlights white.
5. 5Color all the hooves in dark gray, from the cow's back hoof to the four calf hooves.
6. 6Optional: add a slightly darker touch of warm brown along the edges of the brown spots for a little depth.
