A big smiling mother hen sits in the middle of the page, her wing curved around one tiny chick peeking out from underneath. Three more fluffy chicks stand on the grass in front of her. One looks up at her, one faces forward and one gazes off to the side. A wooden fence with tall posts and crossed rails stands behind them, and the ground has small tufts of grass and a few pebbles. The hen's scalloped chest feathers, ruffled tail and comb offer lots to color, and the chicks' round bodies are simple for small hands. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big hen body, back feathers and tail in warm brown, leaving the fence gaps and background white.
- 2Color the hen's face and neck in cream, then add the orange beak and the bright red comb and wattles.
- 3Fill the chicks in golden yellow, leaving the small white eye areas and the white ground spots under their feet.
- 4Color the wooden fence posts and rails in light tan, and the grass tufts in grass green.
- 5Optional: Add dark brown shadows on the wing and the lower tail feathers to give the hen some depth.
