She has a fluffy comb, a wattle, large feathered wings and long scaly legs with wide toes, so there's a lot to color. A simple wooden fence with two tall posts and a few rails stands behind them, with small grass tufts scattered on the ground. The chicks have round heads, big eyes and little wings that small hands can handle. Golden yellow looks good on the chicks and rusty orange-brown on the hen's feathers. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the hen's body and the chicks' bodies in cream and lemon yellow, leaving the small gaps of background white.
- 2Color the fence posts and rails in wood tan, then fill the hen's neck feathers with tangerine orange.
- 3Shade the wings and tail with chocolate brown, working from the darker feathers at the edges toward the cream feathers in the middle.
- 4Add the hen's legs and feet in golden yellow, the grass patch between the legs in grass green, and the comb and wattles in bright red.
- 5Finish the beaks in golden yellow and the lower beak in tangerine orange, leaving the chicks' eye whites untouched.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker brown along the wing edges and a touch of extra yellow on the chicks' cheeks for depth.
