A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big sky and ground: color the sky clouds pale blue and the ground at the bottom soft yellow, leaving the sky background white around the star.
- 2Fill the stable walls, roof beams, manger and fence with medium brown, and the thatched roof with golden yellow, keeping the palm leaves white.
- 3Color the star bright yellow, then add the green hills, bushes and trees in leaf green and forest green, and the distant town dome in soft yellow.
- 4Paint the people: Mary's robe in medium blue and light blue, Joseph's green tunic and dark brown cloak, and faces and hands in peach skin, leaving the baby's face and the sheep's wool untouched.
- 5Add the donkey in warm gray with a light tan nose, the sheep face in light tan, and the clay pots in terracotta orange and ochre.
- 6Optional: Add a light tan or dusty pink touch to the donkey's inner ear and a little darker brown on the shepherd staff for depth.
