Nine Cupcakes on a Tiered Stand, a Cake Table Favorite

Nine frosted cupcakes fill a tall three-tier stand with scalloped plates, and a string of triangle bunting hangs across the top. Every tier holds three cupcakes in ribbed paper liners. Up top you'll find a cherry on a sprinkle-dotted swirl, a big strawberry on a tall swirl and a star topper with little stars on the frosting. The middle has a raspberry and blueberry pair, a sprinkle-covered cupcake and a cherry on a smooth swirl. The bottom repeats the star, the strawberry with blueberry and a sprinkle-topped swirl. The flags carry dots and stripes, so each one can get its own pattern. Pink and red for strawberries and cherries, purple for blueberries and mixed pastel frostings all fit. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the stand: color the plates, the stem and the base in light aqua, and the stem and finial in golden yellow, leaving the background white.
- 2Fill the cupcake liners: blush pink on the top-left, lavender purple on the top-center, sky blue on the top-right, grass green on the middle-left, rose pink in the middle-center, sky blue on the middle-right, lavender purple on the bottom-left, grass green on the bottom-center and sky blue on the bottom-right.
- 3Color the frosting swirls: blush pink on top-left, cream on top-center, lilac on top-right, chocolate brown on middle-left, pale mint on middle-center, rose pink on middle-right, cream on bottom-left, rose pink on bottom-center and chocolate brown on bottom-right.
- 4Add the toppings: cherry red for the cherries and the strawberry, lemon yellow for the star toppers, royal blue for the blueberry, and golden yellow for the striped banner flag.
- 5Color the banner: rose pink on the plain flags, sky blue on the polka dot flags, and golden yellow on the striped flag, keeping the string black.
- 6Optional: Add a little shading in a darker shade of each color along the bottom of the frosting and liners, and leave small white highlights on the strawberry and cherries.
