Painting a Meadow Scene: Troll at the Easel

Standing in a grassy meadow, a cheerful little troll with tall, swept-up hair paints a picture on a wooden easel. One hand holds a long brush and the other holds a paint palette dotted with several blobs of paint. Splat-shaped paint spots decorate the hair, and the outfit is a simple leafy dress with jagged edges. On the canvas you'll spot a smiling sun, puffy clouds, rolling hills, pine trees and a winding path or stream. Three open paint pots sit in the grass at the bottom left, with grass tufts and rounded bushes behind. The big hair shapes and the canvas scene leave kids lots of room to experiment. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the troll's skin in skin peach, covering the face, arms, legs, feet and ears, and add the nose in rose pink.
- 2Fill the wild hair with hot pink, leaving the small white dots as they are, then add the lavender purple and ocean blue flowers and the bright yellow flower on top.
- 3Color the dress in sky blue and the collar in soft gray blue, keeping the eye whites bright white.
- 4Paint the canvas next: sky blue for the sky, golden yellow for the sun, and leave the clouds white. Add ocean blue mountains, olive green pine trees and lime green meadow.
- 5Color the easel and palette in light wood tan and dark wood brown. Fill the paint buckets in light gray, bright yellow, bright red and ocean blue, and add the colored paint spots on the palette.
- 6Optional: Add a little extra shading with a slightly darker shade on the hair and the ground, and finish with grass green bushes and leaf green grass at the bottom.
