Prickly Pear Cactus Chameleon in the Desert

Sitting on top of a large paddle-shaped cactus covered in tiny star-like spines, this big-eyed chameleon smiles while its long striped tail curls around a smaller upright cactus next to it. Its helmet-shaped head has dotted patterns, wavy stripes cover the body and a ridge runs along the back. A round sun with rays shines in the upper corner, and faint desert hills sit behind. The bottom corners have two round barrel cacti topped with flowers, plus small rocks and a spiky desert plant. Shapes are large and clear, which works well for kindergarteners and early elementary kids. Bright greens and teals with orange stripes look good on the chameleon, and soft pink is a nice pick for the cactus flowers. Download the free PDF and print a few extra copies. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Color the big prickly pear pad and the tall arm cactus in leaf green, then fill the two small side cacti in sea green.
- 2Color the sand ground and the sandy patch in sand yellow, and the hills and rocks in light brown.
- 3Fill the chameleon body and legs in bright green, add yellow green to the head, feet and hands, and use deep green for the stripes along the back and tail.
- 4Wrap the coil around the arm in lime green and bright green, with deep green bands, and sun in golden yellow.
- 5Color the flowers on the cacti in pink and add a small orange dot on the chameleon cheek. Leave the eye whites and little white dots on the body and cactus uncolored.
- 6Optional: add a darker shade of green along one side of the cactus pad and the tail to give the drawing a bit more depth.
