Pumpkin Carving Time with a Smiling Gengar Ghost Bear

A cheerful character with round ears and a ghost-like body leans over a big pumpkin, carving it with a little tool in one hand while the other hand rests on the rim. The jack-o'-lantern already has happy squinting eyes, a small triangle nose and a wide toothy grin. A stack of hay bales sits behind them, with a small ribbed pumpkin on each side. Fall leaves are scattered over the ground and along the left edge. The big open shapes suit younger kids, and the leaf and pumpkin details give older ones something to chew on. Glowing yellow and orange inside the pumpkin face look great, as does golden tan on the hay and a mix of reds, browns and greens on the leaves. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big pumpkins: fill the jack-o-lantern and the two smaller pumpkins with pumpkin orange, leaving the stems for later.
- 2Color the bear's head, body and paws with chocolate brown, and fill the inner parts of its ears with light peach.
- 3Fill the hay bales with lemon yellow and add chocolate brown on the sides and bottom edges to show the straw.
- 4Add the leaves around the pumpkins: use leaf green for the bright ones, tomato red and rust orange for the reds, and amber for the golden ones.
- 5Carve the face in lemon yellow for the eyes, nose and smile, then color the bear's mouth dusty rose and tongue soft pink. Make the pumpkin stems dark green and the carving knife light gray with a tomato red handle.
- 6Optional: Add darker shading along the edges of the pumpkins and the bear with a slightly deeper shade of the same color to give the drawing some depth. Leave the bear's eye whites and the background gap white.
