Rearing Horse Throws Fancy Man Off Its Back

A horse rears up on its hind legs with its mouth open and its mane and tail flying, while a man in old-fashioned clothes tumbles off its back. He wears a curled wig, a big bow at the neck, a long coat with ruffled cuffs and pocket flaps, knee breeches and buckled shoes. One hand is raised in surprise and one leg kicks up in the air. Small motion lines around his head, arm and coat show how sudden the fall is. Behind them are tall arched windows and a curved floor line. The large shapes are easy for younger kids, and the lace cuffs, buttons and wig curls give older kids smaller areas to work on. Try soft powdery colors for the wig and coat, then a rich chestnut or dapple gray for the horse. This free printable also works well for talking about motion and how artists show it with simple lines.
