Crowing Rooster Chicken on a Fence Post at Sunrise

Perched on top of a wooden fence post, this proud rooster has his beak wide open mid-crow, and short lines beside his head show the sound. Behind him a half-circle sun comes up over two rolling hills, with rays fanning out to both sides. Little bushes dot the hills and fence rails run along the bottom of the page. He has a wavy comb, rounded wattle, scalloped chest, layered wings and a big curved tail of long feathers. His toes and claws grip the post, which also has wood grain and a knot to color. Reds and oranges suit the comb and tail, and sunny yellow works for the sun and its rays. Preschoolers and early elementary kids will enjoy this free printable, and it fits farm lessons or morning-routine themes. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big sun behind the rooster: fill it with bright yellow, leaving the sun's edges as you like.
- 2Fill the hills and the grass at the bottom with light green and grass green, then add sea green to the bushes.
- 3Color the rooster's neck feathers golden yellow and the lower body and belly chestnut brown.
- 4Paint the wing in teal and orange, then fill the tail feathers with royal blue, sky blue, teal, dark teal and sea green.
- 5Color the comb and wattles red, and the beak, legs and feet bright yellow. Fill the fence post and rails with wood brown, leaving the sky and background white.
- 6Optional: add a few darker strokes along the tail and wing to make the feathers look layered.
