Scarecrow and Bird in a Halloween Cornfield with Pumpkins

Right in the middle of a cornfield, a cheerful patchwork scarecrow holds his arms out wide. A little bird sits on his shoulder with a tiny pumpkin in its beak. He's dressed in a floppy straw hat with a square patch, overalls with button straps, a big front pocket, patches on the knees and sleeves, and a rope tied around his waist. Straw sticks out of his hat, collar, sleeves and pant legs. Tall corn stalks with ripe ears fill both sides of the page, and three plump pumpkins with curly vines sit by his feet. The outlines are bold and clear, which works well for kids who like a bit of detail. Golden yellow corn, rich orange pumpkins and faded denim blue overalls would look great together. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the face and hands in light tan, leaving the eye whites and the teeth white.
- 2Fill the shirt in barn red and the overalls in denim blue, then add the bib patch in pale blue.
- 3Color the hat brim and post in warm brown, the hat band in barn red, and the bird body in pale blue with its wings in sky blue.
- 4Fill the big and small pumpkins in pumpkin orange, then color the neck bow and bird's beak in golden yellow.
- 5Color the corn leaves and the pumpkin leaves in leaf green, keeping the corn cobs and straw cuffs white.
- 6Optional: Add a little shading in a darker shade of each color to make the scarecrow and pumpkins look rounder.
