Sea Otter on Its Back With a Scallop Shell (Sea Animals (General))

Floating on its back, a smiling sea otter cradles a ridged scallop shell against its fluffy belly with both front paws. Round eyes, a big nose, whiskers and little rounded ears make for a sweet, cuddly face, and the furry outline of the body is fun to fill in with short pencil strokes. Two big hind feet point up toward the bottom of the page, with the thick tail curving beneath. Wavy lines across the top and around the otter show the water's surface, and long ribbon-like kelp with little round bladders sways along both sides. There's plenty of open space here for young colorists. Warm browns and tans for the fur, a soft pink shell, layered greens for the kelp and blue waves would finish it off.
