Inside a cheerful submarine, a smiling little seal in a round brass-style diving helmet holds on tight to a big ship's wheel. It wears a double-breasted coat with large buttons, and its flipper tail peeks out at the lower left. Two round portholes behind it show fish swimming past wavy seaweed and tiny bubbles. Control panels with dials, small round buttons and a lever fill the cabin on both sides, and round lights line the ceiling. Thick outlines and roomy shapes work for preschoolers and early elementary kids, and the gauges, bolts and whiskers give older kids little details to tackle. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Fill the large background walls, ceiling, and control panel areas with soft gray blue, leaving the two round gauge faces white.
- 2Color the porthole water with sky blue, and paint the seaweed leaf green.
- 3Paint the diving helmet rims, collar, and hub details golden yellow, and fill the seal's face with tan brown and its muzzle with peach beige.
- 4Color the captain's uniform and sleeves navy blue, the control panel dials ocean blue, and the steering wheel spokes and flippers chocolate brown.
- 5Add the fish in tangerine orange and pumpkin orange, the seal's tongue in rose pink, and leave the eye whites white. Optional: Add a slightly darker tan brown along the edges of the face for a little depth.
