Butterfly Flying Over an Easter Basket and Daisies

A happy butterfly with big eyes, an open-mouth smile and curly-tipped antennae flutters over a woven basket full of Easter eggs. Its striped body and large wings are full of shapes to fill in, like oval panels, circles and rounded spots. The basket below has a braided rope-style handle and a brick-patterned weave, with three smooth eggs peeking over the top. Tall daisy-style flowers with round centers stand on both sides, and tufts of grass run along the bottom. Chunky crayons work well on the big open areas, and the weave and wing patterns give older kids more to do. Purple and pink wing ovals look great, and soft pastel eggs show up well against a golden-brown basket. It's an easy, free choice for a spring or Easter activity at home or in class. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the butterfly's wings: fill the large wing stripes with sky blue and the wing edges and outer sections with lavender purple.
- 2Color the wing sections between the blue stripes and the dots with coral pink, leaving the round dots white for now.
- 3Fill the butterfly's head and the round dots on the wings with golden yellow, and color the body's middle stripes with tangerine orange.
- 4Color the three eggs in the basket: sky blue, leaf green, and coral pink for the front eggs, and lavender purple for the center egg, leaving some space for highlights.
- 5Color the basket with chocolate brown and the rope rim with caramel tan, then add leaf green to the grass blades and leaves.
- 6Finish the daisy centers with golden yellow and the small flower petals with coral pink. Optional: add a little darker shading under the eggs and basket for depth.
