Butterfly Stroke Swimming in an Indoor Pool With Lane Ropes

A cheerful young swimmer charges toward you in the butterfly stroke, arms stretched wide and water flying everywhere. The swimmer has on a swim cap, goggles and a sleeveless swimsuit, with a big open-mouthed smile and droplets flying off the cap. Past the splashes, two lane ropes run back across the pool to three starting blocks at the far edge. Triangle pennant flags hang across the room, big windows fill the back wall, and a life ring, a pool ladder and a shelf of kickboards or foam floats sit on the left. All the wavy water patterns and splashes make many small spaces to fill, so it suits steady hands and confident colorers. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Fill the swimmer's arms, face, neck and chest with peach skin, leaving the goggle lenses and the bright teeth white.
- 2Color the swim cap with royal blue, and use navy blue for the small swimsuit strap peeking out below the chest.
- 3Fill the pool water and the splashes around the arms with light aqua and turquoise, leaving the white foam and bubbles uncolored.
- 4Color the windows' tree views in leaf green and the wall and bench areas in cream yellow, then fill the ceiling and upper window frames with pale steel blue.
- 5Finish the foreground ripples with turquoise and sky blue, keeping the white wave lines as they are.
- 6Optional: Add a slightly darker shade of blue to the bottom edges of the water for a bit of depth.
