A smiling chameleon with big round eyes holds tight to a long branch on this friendly page. The pointed crest on its head, the striped body and the bumpy ridge down its back give you lots of sections to color. At the bottom left, the tail curls into a big spiral, which little hands can trace and fill in ring by ring. Two leaves hang off the right end of the branch, each with a center vein and side lines. Thick outlines and simple shapes suit preschoolers and early elementary kids well. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big green areas: color the head, body, arms, and the front of the tail in lime green, leaving the eye whites and branch white.
- 2Color the leaves in forest green, and the leaf tips and veins can stay as they are in the line drawing.
- 3Fill the curled tail and the bottom spiral with alternating bands of lemon yellow and turquoise blue, following the stripes on the body.
- 4Color the spiky crest along the back in bright orange, one spike at a time.
- 5Add the pale yellow green center of the tail spiral and the small leg detail in lime green to finish the spiral.
- 6Optional: Add light shading on the body and tail in a slightly darker green to make the chameleon look more rounded.
